On September 20, 2024, the School of Education at the City University of Macau successfully hosted the "Seminar on Promoting Diverse Talent Cultivation in Macao’s Postgraduate Education and the Relaunch Ceremony of the Macao Global Education Research and Innovation Center" at the Ho Yin Convention Centre (Conference Halls HG02 and HG03) on the Taipa campus. Funded by the Macao Foundation, the seminar aimed to explore multiple issues concerning the cultivation of diverse talents in Macao’s postgraduate education, including diversified development and talent cultivation strategies within multicultural backgrounds, while marking a fresh beginning for the Macao Global Education Research and Innovation Center.

The event invited prominent experts and scholars from various universities, research institutions, and the education sector across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Distinguished guests included Prof. Christopher DeLuca from Queen’s University (Canada); Prof. Zhao Mingming and Prof. Yan Zi from the Education University of Hong Kong; Prof. Li Shuying and Prof. Cao Xiaoming from Shenzhen University; Prof. Zhang Minxuan from Shanghai Normal University; Prof. Wu Bian from East China Normal University; Prof. Li Shengbing and Prof. Huang Liyan from South China Normal University; Prof. Yang Ruiying from Xi'an Jiaotong University; Prof. Hu Haijian from Guangdong Polytechnic College; Prof. Li Defeng from the University of Macau; Prof. Zhang Huilin from Central South University; Principal Chan Kin Pong from Kwong Tai Middle School; as well as Vice Rector Prof. Zhou Wanlei, Dean Prof. Cheng Li-Ying, Associate Professor Peng Jun (Director of the Macao Global Education Research and Innovation Center), Prof. Martin Cortazzi, and Prof. Andy Curtis from the City University of Macau.

Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei delivered a welcoming address, expressing high expectations for the future development of the research center. He looked forward to its role in driving educational innovation, fostering international cooperation, and enhancing research quality, thereby becoming a vital pillar of Macao's educational community.

Dean Cheng Li-Ying expressed her gratitude in her speech to the experts and scholars for their long-standing support. She emphasized the School's unwavering focus on postgraduate education to promote all-around student development and introduced the School’s mission of "promoting teaching through research, enhancing research through teaching, and using research as guidance."

Director Peng Jun introduced the latest developments of the Center and outlined future research innovation plans and partnerships.
The event invited five renowned scholars and experts to deliver keynote presentations, sharing their research findings and experiences with the participants.

Prof. Christopher DeLuca from Queen’s University presented his keynote titled "Designing Graduate Programs With the End in Mind," focusing on how to design outcome-oriented postgraduate curricula.

Prof. Yan Zi from the Education University of Hong Kong delivered a report titled "Interdisciplinary Graduate Training: The Hong Kong Experience," sharing insights into the collaborative operation of diverse postgraduate programs in Hong Kong.

Prof. Li Shuying from Shenzhen University presented "Social Science or Humanity? Problems and Research Methods in Educational Science," exploring methodologies and challenges within educational research.

Prof. Wu Bian from East China Normal University delivered a report titled "Educational Research Publication and Graduate Mentoring in the Smart Era," providing an in-depth analysis of educational research and supervision issues in the age of intelligence.

Prof. Zhao Mingming from the Education University of Hong Kong presented "Mentorship for Students and Teachers," sharing the mechanisms of how educational systems impact both teachers and students.


The seminar featured breakout discussion sessions in both Chinese and English, covering a wide range of topics. Experts engaged in profound discussions on how to better supervise postgraduates, build effective research teams, and address student stress and mental health. Additionally, the interactive sessions between faculty and students provided students with the opportunity to communicate face-to-face with experts to resolve practical problems encountered during their research process.
Through expert lectures and thematic discussions, this seminar provided participants with cutting-edge academic perspectives and practical guidance. The relaunch of the Macao Global Education Research and Innovation Center has injected new momentum into Macao’s educational research, signifying a further elevation of Macao’s important position in the global education landscape. The School of Education at the City University of Macau will continue to drive innovation and diversification in postgraduate education, contributing to educational research in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
